Abandoned vehicles

We want to reduce the number of abandoned vehicles on our roads and we need your help to achieve this. Under the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978, it is an offence to abandon a vehicle or parts of a vehicle on any land and a person convicted of this offence can be fined or imprisoned, or both. The council can also issue a Fixed Penalty ticket for £200 instead of taking court action for this offence.

What can you do with an old vehicle?

Take it to an authorised scrap yard. If you leave your vehicle on any road or on open ground we will make enquiries into its current ownership and may prosecute you for abandoning it and to recover the council’s costs in dealing with it.

Reporting an abandoned car

If you have found or seen an abandoned vehicle or witnessed one being abandoned and wish to report it please report the incident using the link above. Please submit as much information as possible to enable us to take positive action.

If you have noticed an untaxed vehicle on the public highway then please inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Untaxed vehicles often become abandoned vehicles.
