Tackling anti social behaviour

There are different tools and powers the council and its partners can use to tackle anti social behaviour.

However, for us to be able to use these powers we need help from you to gather evidence about the anti social behaviour you are experiencing.

To report anti social behaviour follow the link on the right.

Some of the powers and methods available to us include:

  • Mediation – getting both parties together to work on a solution to avoid further conflict
  • Acceptable Behaviour Contracts - usually aimed at those aged 10 to 18.

The six month contracts are intended to get the young person to control his/her behaviour within the community and at school. The contract is drawn up between the District Council, Nottinghamshire Police, the young person and his/her parent or guardian.

It is not a legally binding contract - it is voluntary – but it is designed to make the young person think about his/her behaviour.  If after the six months the behaviour is acceptable, the contract will end.  If the behaviour continues in an unacceptable manner evidence will be gathered to look at applying for an Anti Social Behaviour Order.

  • Anti Social Behaviour Orders - in extreme cases we can seek an Anti Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) against anyone.  The Order is granted by the Magistrates or County Courts to prohibit someone from acting in a manner that is likely to or is causing nuisance, alarm or distress. Courts may impose a prison sentence exceeding five years and/or impose a fine on anyone breaching an ASBO
  • Referrals to Fire Setters, Bendigo, Boot Camp, Duke of Edinburgh
  • Referrals to the Youth Offending Services, for prevention work
  • Restorative justice
