How do I become a councillor
There are currently 46 Members within the Newark and Sherwood District Council.
District elections take place every 4 years. Sometimes a vacancy arises in the intervening period and details are publicised as and when this occurs.
Qualifications may vary dependent on the type of election you stand for, but generically you need to be:
-
18 or over
-
A British, Commonwealth or European citizen
-
Registered on the Electoral Register for the area you wish to represent
In order to stand for election, a candidate for a district or county council must submit a nomination paper signed by ten electors for the electoral area (ward or division) by the statutory deadline and in the required form, together with a candidate's consent to nomination.
Further information can be found on the Electoral Commission website.
