Missing dogs

If your dog has been collected by the Dog Warden it will be taken to: NSDC Depot Holding Kennels, Brunel Drive, Newark, Notts.

After a week unclaimed stray dogs are taken to Lincolnshire Rescue Kennels, Ingham, Lincoln. Telephone 01522 730502.

You can report missing dogs to us by calling 01636 650000 or by filling in the form on this page. Before calling please have the following details ready: the breed, age, sex and name of the dog; a description of the dog including any distinguishing marks; the colour of the collar if one was fitted and when and where the dog was lost.

Other organisations that may have your dog include RSPCA Radcliffe-on-Trent Animal Shelter: (0115 933 4422) and local animal shelters. Check the council’s approved out-of-hours dog kennels on 07808 003152.

If all else fails:

Try telephoning your local radio station's appeal line, contacting neighbouring council's dog wardens, placing an advert in shop windows near to where you lost your dog or placing an advert with the local press.

Whatever you do always contact the council. Even if we have not got your dog, our experienced dog wardens may be able to help in some way.

Always try to fit a collar and identification tag to your dog and make sure it has your current address on it. This is a legal requirement and failure to do so may result in a fine of up to £5,000.

Stray dogs

The law classes a dog wandering in a public place without supervision as a stray. Dog wardens pick up strays. Owners are liable to a charge for the dog’s return.

If unclaimed after a few days, the stray is taken to rescue kennels. If unclaimed after a week it may be found a new home, with a new owner. If a stray dog carries identification it makes the return to its owner easy, but many dogs do not and are picked up, impounded and subsequently re-homed.

The council is responsible for collecting stray dogs. If you find a stray dog between 8.30am and 4.30pm, Monday to Thursday (8.30am to 4pm Fridays) ring 01636 650000 to arrange a dog warden to collect it from you. Outside of these hours, either hold onto the dog until you can contact a dog warden on the next working day, or take the dog to our approved kennels.
