MEND - Mind, exercise, nutrition and do it!
MEND - the healthy lifestyle programme for children aged between 7 - 13
MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, DO-IT!) is designed to help young people aged 7-13 and their families learn how to become more active and lead a healthier lifestyle.
The young people will take part in the programme for 4 hours each week, for 10 weeks. During each session they will try different types of physical activity and learn new active games.
Parents and guardians will also attend the sessions, so they can take an active role in supporting their children to make healthy lifestyle changes. Every week covers a different topic, from nutrition and food labelling, to monitoring TV time and experimenting with pedometers.
At the end of the 10 weeks, families will have a greater awareness and understanding of why and how they can make valuable and important lifestyle changes, as well as having made new friendships with other young people who share similar goals.
With the support of their parents, other children and programme staff, they will develop physical activity skills and an awareness of the local activity opportunities available to them.
Health walks
Walking is a great way to keep active, meet new people and have some fun.
Newark and Sherwood District Council organises health walks in conjunction with local volunteer walk leaders.
These walks are completely free and are led by a fully trained walk leader. Across our district we have a number of health walks taking place each week, for a full list of these you can check on the Walking for Health website.
We can also provide free volunteer walk leader training for people who want to start a walking group in their area. We can provide you with everything you need to get this started up.
Take up a leisure centre membership for the best discounts at your local leisure centre.
A membership offers great value options for adults, juniors, families, businesses, students and the over 60s.
