Family activities in Newark and Sherwood

The Woodland Trust's Nature Detectives website offers lots of ideas for pulling on your trainers, rolling up your sleeves and getting outside. You can have fun with boredom-busting school holiday activities, find out about nature's signs of summer, make the most of local woods, look for animal tracks, explore, smell and splash around your local park.

The Workhouse in Southwell will have a family space for the May half term holiday, with different types of activities daily, from crafts to games. The activities are free, but normal admission charges apply.

Friday 1 June 11am to 1pm‌

Learn to juggle, test your balance, spin poi and diabolo and have fun clowning around. On the grass near Rumbles Cafe. Free activity for ages with the council's arts team.

Newark junior parkrun

Newark junior parkrun is for juniors (4-14 year olds). How about trying one of the weekly junior 2k parkrun events?

It is held every Sunday at 9am at Sconce and Devon Park and it is FREE to join in and take part.

The aim is to have fun. Please come along and join in whatever your pace! It's very friendly!

Every week parkrunners grab a post parkrun drink in Rumbles Café - please come and join us.

The Major Oak Woodland Festival

Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 June at Sherwood Forest, Edwinstowe

Join the Sherwood Forest Trust to celebrate the history of Sherwood Forest and re-tell the story of the medieval forest and how it has supported local communities throughout the ages.

Enjoy watching artists and local craftspeople and stroll around the many demonstrations, stalls and exhibitions including crafts such as bodging (pole lathers), charcoal making, horse logging, chainsaw carving and furniture making.

This family event also celebrates the forest as a National Nature Reserve and includes a popular children’s environmental zone.

Robin Hood Portrait Competition

Create the new face of Robin Hood and you could find yourself at the 2018 premiere of the latest Robin Hood film and have your creation on display at the new Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre.

Robin hood is one of our most loved folklore figures and Visit Newark and Sherwood want you to bring him to life by creating by creating a Robin Hood portrait and sending it to by 31 August. It can be a painting, drawing, photograph, illustration, engraving, collage, embroidery – anything goes!

How to enter: 

  • Create your portrait of Robin Hood
  •    It should be no bigger than A4 size (210 x 297 mm)
  •    Read the terms and conditions of the competition
  •    Send your entry to arrive with us by mid night 31 August
  •    Include the following details
    Your name
    Postal address
    Phone number
    Email address
  • If under 18, please include the entrant’s name and date of birth, plus the name, phone number and email address for the entrants parent’s/guardian.
  • Entry by email: Entries can be scanned in or photographed and the digital image sent to
