Leaflets are being sent to homes in Blidworth, Rainworth, Clipstone, Edwinstowe, Ollerton, Boughton, Bilsthorpe, Southwell and Farnsfield, as part of a consultation to find out how many households would be interested in joining a scheme.
The cost for the service would be £30 a year for a brown bin and an all year-round collection service - every two weeks from March to November and monthly during December to February.
Newark and Sherwood District Council has looked to implement a similar scheme of its own but the level of interest meant it would not be financially viable. However, Mansfield District Council already offers the service to its residents and could extend it to homes in Newark and Sherwood district if there’s sufficient interest.
Compostable garden waste makes up approximately 32% of the contents of a typical refuse bin. Unfortunately all the waste that goes into the green residual waste bins is buried in landfill. Mansfield District Council provides a chargeable garden waste service to enable its residents to separate their compostable garden waste which helps to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and reduces the amount of greenhouse gases produced.
The service allows residents to recycle their garden waste including grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, leaves, small branches and twigs, plants, weeds and cut flowers.
Cllr Philip Shields, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council, said: “We already offer this excellent service to Mansfield residents and it is a huge success with more than 18,000 households signed up. We now have the opportunity to expand it into Newark and Sherwood; however the scheme can only go ahead if there is enough interest. We would encourage residents in Blidworth, Rainworth, Clipstone, Edwinstowe, Ollerton, Boughton, Bilsthorpe, Farnsfield and Southwell to respond to the consultation. If you want this service to become a reality then this is your opportunity to tell us and every response counts!”
Cllr Nora Armstrong, Cabinet Member for Clean and Green at Newark and Sherwood District Council, added: "Mansfield District Council offers an established green waste collection service. If this project receives sufficient interest from householders in the west of Newark and Sherwood district, some of our residents will be able to take up an excellent green waste service and I hope people respond to the leaflets or fill in the form on the website, to register their interest.
"We hope the interest expressed and the publicity campaign help to make this project viable. I am very supportive of these proposals and would like to see a green waste collection service established in this part of our district, helping to increase the district's recycling rate."
If you live in any of the areas mentioned in Newark and Sherwood, please return the leaflet to the FREEPOST address included on the form, visit www.mansfield.gov.uk/gardenwaste or call 01623 463 463 by 14th December 2012.
