Garden refuse scheme expanding

4 December 2013

Garden waste collection services in Newark and Sherwood will be extended next year.

Garden waste collection services in Newark and Sherwood will be extended next year.

A number of locations in the south-west of the district will be covered in a partnership initiative with neighbouring Rushcliffe Borough Council from April 1, 2014.

Around 3,500 properties in Newark and Sherwood received leaflets on the scheme recently and 400 people responded, saying they would be willing to pay £30 a year to have their garden refuse collected. That figure is expected to increase as word spreads on the advantages of the scheme and in view of the proposed closure of the Nottinghamshire County Council-run household waste and recycling centre at Fiskerton.

Newark and Sherwood District Council already has a partnership agreement in place with Mansfield District Council for a garden waste collection service in the west of the district and is planning to run a similar service in Newark and Balderton.

There are currently more than 28,500 residents in Rushcliffe who already pay for the service.

The benefits of a regular, clean and efficient scheme to remove their green waste will now include these areas of Newark and Sherwood:
Averham, Bleasby, Bulcote, Caythorpe, Epperstone, Fiskerton Cum Morton, Gonalston, Gunthorpe, Halloughton, Hoveringham, Lowdham, Oxton, Rolleston, Staythorpe and Thurgaton.
Across Nottinghamshire, all councils are discussing ways in which they can work together on waste and recycling and this expansion provides an excellent basis to explore further chances to work with others in the future.
