Newark letting agent urges home owners ‘Use Don’t Lose’
Empty home owners in Newark and Sherwood are being encouraged to find out how they can turn their empty homes into an income at an empty homes fair designed to bring home owners, developers, builders, agents and tenants together.
Newark and Sherwood District Council, Mansfield District Council, Gedling Borough Council and local businesses including Buttercross Estates will be holding the first empty homes fair at Kelham Hall on March 23, 2016 from 12pm.
The ‘Use Don’t Lose’ event aims to match empty home owners with developers, investors and tenants in order to turn their empty property into a lump sum or a regular income.
Around 1,200 letters have been sent to home owners across both of the districts to invite them to the event which runs from 12-4pm. The event has been organised in partnership with a number of local businesses who are involved in the residential property industry including estate agents, builders and solicitors.
Daniel Otton, of Buttercross Estates, says “Around 40% of the empty homes in Newark & Sherwood have been vacant for over 6 months and approximately 211 properties have been vacant for over 2 years. Not only are they costing the owners a lot of money, they are an eyesore and a worry to the neighbouring community.
“As a local letting agent, it frustrates me seeing properties empty when we have really good people waiting for the right home.
“If you have an empty property, I urge you to come along to the event, even just to talk to the local industry experts.”
In order to keep up with housing demands, the government aim for 250,000 new homes to be built per year. A huge target considering developers have only managed half this figure over each of the past 5 years. Estimates suggest there are over 600,000 empty properties across England alone and some reports suggest this could be closer to 1 million across the UK.
So with such a huge stock of properties seemingly ignored, and the shortage of new homes being built, why isn’t something being done about it?
Whether you are an empty home owner, investor, landlord or tenant you are welcome to attend the free event.
