Free kits offered to help clean up Newark and Sherwood

22 February 2017

Voluntary groups throughout Newark and Sherwood are being offered free ‘clean-up kits’ to take part in the Great British Spring Clean 2017.

The litter-busting initiative is aimed at getting people ‘outdoors and active’ in their communities and could involve environmental groups, clubs, schools and businesses in the district.

Newark and Sherwood District Council is offering the kits as part of the campaign launched by Keep Britain Tidy to clear up Britain. This year, Keep Britain Tidy is aiming to inspire even more people to help clear up their neighbourhoods.

The council has eight volunteer kits which will be given free to any community groups wanting to get involved in the campaign. Each kit includes:

• 5 x Adult Litterpickers
• 5 x Kids Litterpickers
• 5 x Handihoop bag openers
• 5 x Adult red pvc gloves
• 5 x Rigger Gloves
• 2 x Red Kit bags

The council will also supply bin bags on request and arrange free collection of litter - as long as we know where your litter needs to be collected from and you have told us in advance.

The aim is to encourage activities throughout March with a particular focus on registering clean-up events over the long weekend from March 3-5 but any activities throughout the month would be encouraged.

Newark and Sherwood is a beautiful part of the country and the council works very hard to keep it this way.

Lowdham Parish Council has already organised a litter pick on Sunday,  March 12.
Parish clerk Yvonne Greenfield said: “We have advertised for volunteers to come and help at the litter pick. We already have a couple of volunteer footpath wardens who tidy up and litter pick on a regular basis so it would be great if we could get some more regular street wardens too, perhaps to adopt their road or area.  All volunteers are welcome and the kits will be a great help.”

Last year as part of Clean for the Queen, local authorities across the UK helped to inspire a quarter of a million people to get outdoors and clean-up their local neighbourhoods.
