Image of fireworks A range of legislative controls came into effect in 2004, covering the sale and possession of fireworks and the organisation of authorised fireworks displays. Any premises intending to sell or supply fireworks must be licensed by Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards.

Dealing with the misuse of fireworks within the community is the responsibility of the police. There are a number of offences, each carrying a maximum penalty of £5,000.

It is an offence to let off fireworks between 11pm and 7am (with certain exceptions). It is an offence for anyone to sell fireworks to anyone less than 18 years of age.

It is also an offence for anyone less than 18 years of age to possess a firework in a public place and it is an offence to sell to the public fireworks which produce a noise level of more than 120 decibels (AI). Professional displays may exceed this level.
