A very exciting venture
We are in the process of developing and securing funding for a new museum in the Old Magnus Buildings.
The decision for our bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund will be known in May 2012.
Our vision for this very exciting venture is to create a visitor attraction that encompasses the heritage of Newark and Sherwood, tells the story of its people and the events that shaped the nation.
The original Tudor building was founded by Thomas Magnus as a free school in 1529.
Previously Newark Museum Appletongate, the Old Magnus Buildings have been added to over time, creating spaces which reflect varying historical architectural periods.
The new museum aims to become a gateway to national Civil War learning, with a combination of local history galleries being an excellent resource for schools.
In addition there will be temporary exhibitions from the museum’s collections and gallery spaces becoming a vibrant location for artists to hire.
The museum will be a place to meet with a cafe in the superb Tudor Hall, leading to an outdoor space in the courtyard garden and a community room that can be hired separately from the museum. The museum will be a unique venue for meetings, events and celebrations.
If we are successful with the HLF bid, and with securing other funding, then we will move from Millgate into the Old Magnus Buildings in 2014.
Until then it is business as usual at Millgate we are continuing with a lively programme of temporary exhibitions, events, school holiday workshops and trails.
We are at a crucial time in the HLF application process where we need to raise 23.5% of funding from other sources. We already have 11.5% of funding in place and hope to get 65% of our funding from HLF.
In order to fulfil our bid for a 21st century museum, we need you to donate or join the friends group to support the project.
