About Us

Welcome to the web pages for Newark Museum Service which incorporates Newark Millgate Museum, the Gilstrap Centre, the Resource Centre and the Collections and Learning Team. We hope you like them and if you have any suggestions for what you would like to see in them please get in touch.

We have a rich museum collection of over 70,000 items that contains Archaeology,Costume, Natural History, Art, Photographs, Social History, Civil War and Military items. A small selection of objects from all of these areas are on display at the Museums in our Permanent and Temporary Exhibitions, so come along and have a look at Newark Millgate Museum as there is always something changing and always something new to look and marvel at.
As well as exhibitions, the museums also offer an exciting programme of events ranging from children's workshops and competitions to hands on activities and reminiscence sessions for older people.

Our education and outreach programme provides opportunities for life-long learning that are both imaginative and stimulating whilst our schools programme includes includes talks, tours, hands on and creative activities along with classroom sessions all linked to the National Curriculum. The outreach programme takes museum objects out into the community to schools, village halls and other community venues, via discovery boxes, informative displays and fun special events.

We also support learning through the Resource Service for research and identification of objects. Visitors are also encouraged to research the museum collections and local studies sections and expert curatorial staff are on hand to help and advise on those mysterious objects that are dug up whilst gardening, or found in the attic that just might turn out to be treasure!

If you would like to get involved in your local museum contact us for details of our Friends Group, Volunteer programme and our links with local groups. There is something for all ages and abilities.
