Safer Food Better Business
Safer Food Better Business

Safer Food Better Business is a novel, simple and jargon free system developed by the Food Standards Agency, the catering industry and local authorities, which will assist small catering businesses meet the new laws that came into effect in January 2006. The Food Standards Agency has designed a simple to use tool kit which comprises of a free information pack and a diary which allow basic records to be kept. This can be downloaded from the FSA or a hard copy ordered direct from the FSA order line - 0845 6060667. There are versions for caterers, retailers and care homes. Diary refills can be ordered too.

All food outlets must produce food that is safe to eat, but the food regulations say that businesses must now be able to show what they do to make food safe to eat, and to have this written down. They must also keep records of the checks made.

The Safer Food Better Business approach is straight forward and will not hinder operators or staff working in the business. It has been widely accepted as an easy management tool and helps with staff training. Successfully put into place, this system will not only allow people to comply with law but also protect their business's reputation. It may also improve bottom line profits by reducing food wastage and getting staff to think about food safety.
