What to See and Do

Newark-on-Trent
Newark Castle by the River Trent

Newark-on-Trent

Newark-on-Trent is an attractive market town situated along the river Trent.  It offers you a wealth of history, interesting buildings and museums.

Its most famous period in history was during the Civil War in which it was a Royalist stronghold and withstood three sieges.  Many reminders of that period can still be seen in the town, including its imposing 12th century castle.  Find out more about its history (PDF Format) and the Castle Grounds

Newark Market - Flower Stall

You will discover a lovely cobbled market place on which busy markets are held.  Many architecturally beautiful buildings can be found around the square and in the interesting streets, nearby; some with royal, others with literary connections.

Why not visit one of Newark's Museums or its beautiful Parish Church? The Millgate Museum will offer you a glimpse of Newark's social and working life in the 19th and 20th centuries among its period streets, shops and rooms.  Newark Town Hall Museum and Art Gallery can be found in Newark's Georgian Town Hall, which includes the Mayor's Parlour and elegant Ballroom.  The collections consist of civic plate, regalia and fine art.  Paintings include works by William Nicholson, Stanley Spencer and notable local artists. Just outside Newark, on a former war-time bomber base near the village of Winthorpe, is the Newark Air Museum.  This museum, one of the largest volunteer-managed aviation museums in Britain, is a must for the aviation enthusiast. St Mary Magdalene Church is one of the finest Parish Churches in the country.

Take a trip to Newark's own Palace Theatre with its varied programme of live entertainment and cinema.

Newark is a warm and friendly town and has lovely shops and excellent eating places.  Its Palace Theatre has a packed entertainment programme.  It is renowned for its international antique fairs.

Riverside Park Playground

By way of contrast, try taking the enjoyable Riverside Walk from the Castle to Millgate Museum and, on your way back, have a relaxing river trip on the Trent. Newark Line operates river trips during the summer and on Bank Holidays.

The award-winning Riverside Park has seen a major redevelopment of derelict land into an arena and children's play area.  It  has been a venue for the Newark on Water Festival, a stunning celebration of river life and world culture. Further along is  the Town Lock Park and Sensory Garden, with it sensory seated areas, piped classical music and water feature has been designed for people with a visual impairment, but can be appreciated by all. For more on our local parks and open spaces.

To make the most of your stay, why not visit the Tourist Information Centre for detailed information, books, booklets and trails of Newark.  For information on where to park and how to plan your journey.

Newark people are proud of their town and so they should be.
