Newark-on-Trent Newark-on-Trent is an attractive market town situated along the river Trent. It offers you a wealth of history, interesting buildings and museums. Its most famous period in history was during the Civil War in which it was a Royalist stronghold and withstood three sieges. You will discover a lovely cobbled market place on which busy markets are held. Many architecturally beautiful buildings can be found around the square and in the interesting streets, nearby; some with royal, others with literary connections. Why not visit one of Newark's Museums or its beautiful Parish Church? The Millgate Museum will offer you a glimpse of Newark's social and working life in the 19th and 20th centuries among its period streets, shops and rooms. Newark Town Hall Museum and Art Gallery can be found in Newark's Georgian Town Hall, which includes the Mayor's Parlour and elegant Ballroom. The collections consist of civic plate, regalia and fine art. Paintings include works by William Nicholson, Stanley Spencer and notable local artists. Just outside Newark, on a former war-time bomber base near the village of Winthorpe, is the Newark Air Museum. This museum, one of the largest volunteer-managed aviation museums in Britain, is a must for the aviation enthusiast. St Mary Magdalene Church is one of the finest Parish Churches in the country. Take a trip to Newark's own Palace Theatre with its varied programme of live entertainment and cinema. Newark is a warm and friendly town and has lovely shops and excellent eating places. Its Palace Theatre has a packed entertainment programme. It is renowned for its international antique fairs. By way of contrast, try taking the enjoyable Riverside Walk from the Castle to Millgate Museum and, on your way back, have a relaxing river trip on the Trent. Newark Line operates river trips during the summer and on Bank Holidays.
