What to See The delightful District of Newark and Sherwood extends a warm welcome to you. Newark and Sherwood's most famous inhabitant was, of course, Robin Hood, a name associated, with many of our towns and villages. For example, Edwinstowe, where Robin Hood and Maid Marian were said to have married; Blidworth with Will Scarlett's burial place and Maid Marian's cottage, Sherwood Forest and the Major Oak. And yet, the District has many more hidden delights. Historic Towns There are two very interesting market towns - historic Newark-on-Trent with its important Civil War connections and the pretty little town of Southwell, famous for its Bramley apple and with an imposing Norman Minster. Parks and Leisure Pursuits And if you’re looking for sport and leisure, we guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. Excellent golf courses, horse riding, fishing, boating and an all-weather racecourse can be found right here. Many of our parks and gardens have the coveted Green Flag Award. Enjoy a peaceful walk along the riverside, discover one of our country parks, explore Newark Castle, walk along the Robin Hood Way or Trent Valley Way.
