What to See and Do

Welcome
Japanese Garden North Clifton Newark Nottinghamshire

What to See

The delightful District of Newark and Sherwood extends a warm welcome to you.

Newark and Sherwood's most famous inhabitant was, of course, Robin Hood, a name associated, with many of our towns and villages.  For example, Edwinstowe, where Robin Hood and Maid Marian were said to have married; Blidworth with Will Scarlett's burial place and Maid Marian's cottage, Sherwood Forest and the Major Oak.

And yet, the District has many more hidden delights.

Historic Towns

There are two very interesting market towns - historic Newark-on-Trent with its important Civil War connections and the pretty little town of Southwell, famous for its Bramley apple and with an imposing Norman Minster.

Parks and Leisure Pursuits

And if you’re looking for sport and leisure, we guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. Excellent golf courses, horse riding, fishing, boating and an all-weather racecourse can be found right here. Many of our parks and gardens have the coveted Green Flag Award. Enjoy a peaceful walk along the riverside, discover one of our country parks, explore Newark Castle, walk along the Robin Hood Way or Trent Valley Way.

Why not browse our A to Z of attractions which is published each year.

Villages and Churches

You will also be able to discover a wealth of attractive villages, many of which have retained their special traditions - maypole dancing, the medieval system of open field farming, the smallest pub and the best kept phone box in the world!

The Newark and Sherwood District is a region endowed with a variety of historical buildings and churches of architectural significance and interest - see our churches to visit pages.

A number of places are associated with famous names, such as Charles I, Byron, Darwin, Helen Cresswell, Kate Greenaway...  Consult our Gazetteer to find out more.

Finally, why not try out our 10 Free Things to do in Newark and Sherwood
