DOG CONTROL ORDERS INTRODUCED

Published:Monday 12 April 2010

Dog Control Orders

Dogs can no longer be taken into a number of play areas and open spaces in Newark and Sherwood in a bid to make sure people look after their pets in public spaces.

A series of Dog Control Orders (DCOs) came into force in Newark and Sherwood on April 7 which stop pet owners taking their dogs into certain public spaces across the district.

This is not a complete ban of dogs in parks.

The DCOs, introduced by the council under section 55 of The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, stop pet owners taking their dogs into more than 70 designated sites throughout the district, predominately play areas, fields and open spaces. This equates to approximately just 8% of all the natural space which is publically accessible in the district.

The orders also mean the council’s animal welfare officers, park rangers, and police community support officers can issue on-the-spot fines of £75 for breaches of the specific orders, as well as failure to remove dog faeces from all relevant land within the Newark and Sherwood district. Those who dispute a fixed penalty notice in court could face a maximum fine of £1,000.

The council has worked with parish councils which requested these orders based on their specific knowledge of their local area. The new orders will enable the council to exercise more controls over dog fouling and on owners who allow their dogs to get out of control.
