Food Safety and Hygiene

This is one of the major functions undertaken by the Environmental Health Section and comprehensive hygiene and safety advice is available to both the public and food businesses on food safety and food standards.

The Environmental Health Section has a legal duty to inspect all food premises and food vehicles and to investigate incidences of food poisoning. In addition to these statutory duties we provide advice on food training issues and we have also developed a local food premises hygiene star rating scheme (scores on the doors). There is also available a food alert page where you can find out additional information on the latest product withdrawals.

The key initiatives we are currently working on is the Safer Food, Better Business Scheme which is designed to assist small businesses with the introduction of new food hygiene regulations.

We can provide information on healthy eating and lifestyles and we actively participate in the annual food safety week campaign.

All food premises are subject to the requirements of the Health Act 2006 regarding smokefree premises.  Advice and information about the law can be found on our smokefree pages.
