Walking
Walking in Newark and Sherwood
Why Walk?
Apart from being free, relaxing and fun other commonly quoted reasons for walking include keeping fit, enjoying the countryside, watching the seasons change and socialising.

In addition, of course, walking has many health benefits. Walking can help with your general health, improve your fitness, help you to 'de-stress' and is an activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Visit the Ramblers website for information about walking for health.
If you are interested in walking your way to health you can find lots more information on the WHI Website which is the largest national body promoting and setting the standards for led health walks.
Nottinghamshire County Council can provide lots of information about walking in Nottinghamshire, including links to useful organisations and many free publications and maps.
Our Tourist Information Centres can also provide advice on local walking routes that are suitable for all abilities, as well as providing free maps and leaflets and books to purchase.
Planning Your Route - Where To Walk?
You can walk on all rights of way; footpaths, bridleways, byways and restricted byways as well as on Open Access land, these are all shown on Ordnance Survey Landranger and Explorer maps.
Some areas of farmland are open to walkers through a Defra/Natural England scheme called Countrywalks. You can search for routes in Nottinghamshire on their website.
