Scores on the Doors

Food Hygiene Star Rating Scheme

A scheme to inform consumers about the hygiene conditions in local food outlets was introduced in August 2007.

This is commonly known as scores on doors and already operates in other parts of England. It involves a star rating for every food outlet.

A star ratings summary is issued for display at each premises and indicates the food safety conditions that were present at the time of the last planned inspection. This is not a statement about the quality of the food. Only businesses inspected since 11th July 2006 are listed. The worst premises that have no stars have not been issued with a rating summary and are subject to action to improve. Manufacturers are not rated.

This scheme aims to:ensure that those food businesses achieving consistently high standards of food hygiene are publicly recognised and rewarded. provide consumers with a user-friendly way to access the information they need so they can make informed choices about where to eat in the District. encourage food businesses where deficiencies are found to improve their standards of food hygiene leading to better food safety.

Evidence suggests that the scheme will benefit consumers, businesses and the local economy by driving up standards and making Newark and Sherwood a safer place to eat and drink. .

An explanation of the scheme and all available scores can be viewed here

Concerned about food hygiene standards?

The recent investigation into cases of E coli 0157 infection in Wrexham is receiving now the full attention of health experts and consumers are once again concerned about the places where they eat.

In a few businesses everywhere the hygiene standards need to be better. If you are worried about what the inspector found last time the safety checks were made and want to know what level of confidence there was in the management you can find out now by checking out our  Scores on the Doors  web page.

In all cases where no stars were given the premises were either dirty, in poor repair and the inspector had little confidence in the hygiene management.

This kind of business always gets more attention by officials and has to improve conditions but sadly a poor track record can be typical of some operators. It can help consumers who want to aim for the best standards if they look at the star rating scores. There is of course no guarantee that the score reflects anything other than the previous inspection result and conditions can change either way.

If you something you have seen at a food business doesn’t look right it helps to tell the Council so that checks can be made. Contact us on 01636 655606/09.
