Growth Point
Setting the Scene
The Growth Point Initiative is part of the governments’ response to the shortage of housing across the country. It seeks to facilitate the delivery of new homes and economic development in places where development will be environmentally sustainable and have a positive impact on local infrastructure.
Newark and Sherwood
In designating Newark as a New Growth Point, our Government entered into a long-term partnership with us, recognising our ambitions for sustainable expansion of the town and other settlements.
The level of expansion is subject to comprehensive testing and public consultation through the regional and local planning processes to ensure that individual proposals are sustainable, acceptable environmentally and realistic in terms of infrastructure.
This testing includes detailed studies on flood risk and road and traffic impact, retail needs, housing assessments and employment studies. The rationale for our growth will be expressed through the Local Development Framework and Community Plan. Close involvement with stakeholders through the Local Strategic Partnership is essential.
Our vision for Newark and Sherwood is to enhance and build upon the quality of our urban environment. Newark provides an excellent location for accelerated growth, which will benefit local regeneration goals and result in the delivery of substantial affordable housing and new infrastructure for new and existing residents and businesses.
Newark Growth Point Revised Programme of Development
Following confirmation of Newark's Growth Point status, we were requested by Communities and Local Government (CLG) to prepare a Programme of Development (PoD). The PoD sets out our strategy for delivering Newark's growth over a period of 10 years and beyond. Furthermore, it identifies areas where CLG funding support would be beneficial in order to deliver associated infrastructure. Click here to download your copy.
