Southwell Swimming Club

Southwell Swimming Club Logo Southwell Swimming Club was formed in 1965, shortly after the opening of Southwell Leisure Centre. Since then, the club has continued to develop and expand. It aims to promote and develop efficient swimming according to the Amateur Swimming Association Technical Rules of Racing.

We specialise in training ‘improvers’ to develop their technique and encourages participation in competitive events relative to age and ability. We are friendly and welcoming to everyone and treat all our members in a fair and equitable manner.

Affiliation to the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA)

We are affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association - East Midlands Region and Notts ASA. Details of affiliation, membership and insurance are available on request.

The ASA runs a quality scheme called Swim 21, which allows participating clubs to demonstrate that their coaching and administrative procedures conform to standards laid down nationally by the ASA. Our club has achieved SWIM 21 status.

Membership

The club is open to the following:

  • Advanced Improvers who have acquired the basic skills – minimum of 100m + ASA Water Skills Grade 6 is a good benchmark.
  • Adults who wish to improve their strokes or prepare themselves for competitions such as triathlons.
  • Teenagers studying for GCSE Sports Science or the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
  • Affiliated Senior Water Polo, Junior and Mini Water Polo.

All members are considered to be ‘competitive swimmers’ and are encouraged to participate in galas and competitions for the club if selected.

Membership application forms can be obtained from the club secretary or from the club reception desk at southwell leisure centre on training nights.

Membership fees

Fees for 2012 are £50 per quarter (special concessionary rates can be negotiated subject to circumstances). The fees cover the following:

  • ASA affiliation and registration
  • Pool Hire
  • Administration costs

Leagues and competitions

The club competes in various Nottinghamshire swimming leagues, and galas between local clubs.

Club Championships
Club championships are held in the autumn and awards are presented at a presentation evening, which is also a great social event for swimmers and parents. This is traditionally held early in the New Year.

County Championships
The county championships are held over a number of weekends in February and March. Entry times, which must be achieved by December 31st of the previous year, are challenging and getting into the championships is, in itself, an achievement. Here, swimmers have the chance to test themselves against the best county swimmers.

Galas
In friendly local galas the emphasis is on swimmers individually improving their times against swimmers from a wide area. Galas are an integral part of training and all swimmers, whatever their ability, are encouraged to participate, to put their level of competence to the test.

Training

Training is organised by the head coach in consultation with the team of voluntary coaches who are fully qualified and hold the necessary accreditation. Decisions on movement between squads and on selection for competitions and galas are the responsibility of the head coach in consultation with the coaches.

As a competitive club, all swimmers are expected to make themselves available for gala selection. The following key criteria are considered for selection for competitions:

  • Personal best times.
  • Previous gala availability
  • Commitment to training
