Twinning brings many other benefits. Most people involved would say that deep and valuable friendships have grown, not only with people from overseas, but within their own community too. Moreover, everyone will tell you twinning is great fun.
A wealth of different twinning arrangements exists in the district of Newark and Sherwood, from small villages to the larger towns of Newark and Southwell. People visit their twinned partners from France, the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland.
They also participate in Newarks of the World reunions, where people from all the different ‘Newarks’ in the world (e.g. Nawark, New Jersey, U.S.A.) come together.
Trips vary from social exchanges with a programme of events and activities, to projects involving the environment, the internet, the euro, sporting encounters, cultural exchanges, scouts, schools, teacher exchanges and emergency services personnel exchanges.
Each August the fruits of the vine and the labours of the growers are celebrated during the Breisgau Weinfest held in the Market Place and streets of Emmendingen over four evenings. During a visit to the Weinfest in 2006, members of Newark Town Council and Newark Twinning Association had the idea to recreate the Weinfest in Newark in some way.
It was decided to hold the First Newark Wine Festival as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations. The event proved to be a great success and the town council passed a resolution that the LocAle & Weinfest would be a biennial event in Newark’s events calendar.
