As you follow the Robin Hood trail (PDF File, 1,218kb) to 10 sites, all linked with the legendary Robin Hood, there are suggestions of alternative places of interest, from country parks to museums and markets.

Where does the trail start?

The trail begins at Newark Castle, where King John died in 1216. Also in the castle grounds is Newark Tourist Information Centre where we can answer any queries you may have, as well as stocking a wide range of gifts and souvenirs.

You will then move on to the imposing Southwell Minster where you can see 'the Green Man' - a pagan symbol carved into the minster. The trail then takes in a number of Robin Hood sites in the villages of Oxton, Blidworth and Kings Clipstone where the ruins of King John's Palace (above) remain.

The 8th site on the trail is in Edwinstowe, in the heart of Sherwood Forest. Here you can visit the church where it is said that Robin married Maid Marian, and there is a statue of the couple in the village centre.

We then move into Sherwood Forest itself to visit 'The Major Oak' where legend has it that Robin and his outlaws gathered to plan their ambushes.

Finally, the trail ends in the charming village of Wellow. The ancient yew trees in St Swithun's churchyard provided Robin with his bow staves.
