Newark Constituency Parliamentary by-election 2014

Following the resignation of Mr Patrick Mercer, the Newark Parliamentary Constituency by-election will be held on Thursday 5 June 2014. Polling stations will be open from 7.00am until 10.00pm. You can only vote if your name is on the Register of Electors.

The Register of Electors

The current register was published on the 17th February 2014 from responses to the annual registration forms sent out to all properties from August 2013. If you have recently moved address or have not registered, you will need to complete and return a voter registration form (PDF File, 270kb) by Monday 19 May 2014 to register for this election. This form must not be completed with an electronic signature.

Postal and Proxy Voting

If you would like to vote by post, you will need to complete a postal vote application form (PDF File, 91kb). The Electoral Registration Officer must receive your application before 5pm on Tuesday 20 May 2014 if it is to be effective for this election. If you are granted a postal vote, you will NOT be able to vote in person at this election. This form must not be completed with an electronic signature.

If you would like to appoint a proxy (someone to vote on your behalf), you will need to complete a proxy vote application form (PDF File, 91kb). The Electoral Registration Officer must receive your application before 5pm on Wednesday 28 May 2014 if it is to be effective for this election. If you have appointed a proxy to vote in person for you, you can still vote yourself, but ONLY if your proxy has not already voted on your behalf. This form must not be completed with an electronic signature.

Notice of Election

The Notice of Election (PDF File, 189kb) publicises the election that is to be held and gives the date in which prospective candidates must submit a nomination paper.

Candidates

If you intend to stand as a candidate you must complete a nomination paper, consent to nomination and any other relevant forms contained in the candidates nomination pack (PDF File, 289kb). These should be submitted to the Returning Officer by 4pm on Tuesday 13 May 2014.

A prospective candidate may request the Acting Returning Officer to prepare a nomination paper for signature. If so, please contact the Elections Office on 01636 655222/655245 or by email at voting@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk

Statement of Persons Nominated (including Notice of Poll and Polling Places)

The Acting Returning Officer is required to publish a Statement of Persons Nominated(PDF version) – new link, file type and size will be added automatically when the document is available, no later than 5pm Tuesday 13 May 2014.

The Acting Returning Officer will also publish a Situation of Polling Places (PDF version) – new link, file type and size will be added automatically when the document is available, no later than 5pm Tuesday 13 May 2014.

Notice of Election Agents

The Acting Returning Officer is required to publish a Notice of Election Agents (PDF version) – new link, file type and size will be added automatically when the document is available, no later than Tuesday 13 May 2014.

Counting of the votes

Firstly, the ballot boxes will be verified to ensure that the number of ballot papers in each box is the number that has been issued (postal ballot papers that are to be included in the count will also be verified). Once verified, the ballot papers will be sorted and counted for each candidate.

The verification of the ballot boxes and counting of the votes will take place at Kelham Hall, Kelham, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG23 5QX, following the close of poll.

The Acting Returning Officer will publish a Declaration of Result of Poll(PDF version) – new link, file type and size will be added automatically when the document is available, as soon as possible following the count.
