Equality and Diversity

The council already has in place a Race Equality Scheme and a Guide for Disabled People.

We are currently looking at ways to make our premises more accessible to disabled visitors.  As an employer we also have an Equal Opportunities Policy

The council has a generic approach to equality issues, but within that particularly recognises the equality characteristics of race, disability, gender, gender reassignment, age, sexual orientation, religion or belief, pregnancy and maternity, marriage and civil partnership and caring responsibilities.

On these web pages you can view details of our:-

  • Single Equality Scheme
  • Guide for Disabled People
  • Equality Opportunities Policy
  • Equality Impact Assessments (EIAs) - which analyse the effect of any new or changed policies and practices on equality
  • Impact Needs Requirement Assessments (INRAs) - which analyse the effect of our functions, services and existing policies on equality

Generic Equality Scheme

The council welcomed the introduction of the Race Relations (Amendment Act) 2000. The duties the Act places on us as a local authority are a challenge for us to continue to examine our practices and policies to ensure that all our residents and service users are treated equally. It is also an opportunity for us to raise the profile of equality and diversity issues across the District and with our partners.

Our Generic Equality Scheme is the foundation and our commitment to making this happen. We recognise the importance of fair treatment and equal access to our services and employment opportunities and believe that all equality issues should be included within one document so that they can be mainstreamed into policy formation and service delivery.  You can also request a printed copy of the document by telephoning 01636 655215 or you can download a copy from this page.

Equal Opportunities Policy

Our Policy is:

“It is the policy of this Authority to ensure equal opportunities for job applicants and employees, regardless of race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, disability, sex or marital status and that individuals are not disadvantaged by conditions or requirements which cannot be shown to be justifiable.

The operation of this policy will be monitored and reviewed periodically through the established Joint Consultative machinery. If any employee considers that he or she has been unfairly treated on any of the grounds a complaint may be made through the agreed procedure for dealing with grievances.”
