Making payments to the council

Paying by direct debit  (Council Tax, Business Rates, Rents)

Paying by direct debit helps us keep our collection costs down, which helps us keep your bills  lower. 

Setting up a direct debit is easy. Simply telephone 01636 650000 to supply your bank details and our staff will do the rest for you. We also offer a choice in the days we will collected your payment.

Alternatively you can download a direct debit form which you can return with your payment details.  

Paying by telephone (Council Tax, Business Rates, Rents, Sundry payments*)

You can pay over the phone using a debit or credit card.  Please call our 24 hour telephone payments line:  01636 655978.

Please make sure that you have ready:

  • your debit or credit card
  • your account reference number
  • the amount you wish to pay

*Includes Lifeline payments, pest control invoices, parking permits, commercial waste, re-chargeable works and housing benefit overpayments

Paying by cheque or postal order via post (available for most services)

You can send (or hand deliver to one of our offices – see Paying in Person below) your payment by post by enclosing  your postal orders orcheque made payable to ‘Newark and Sherwood District Council’ to:

Please write your name, address and any account or reference number on the back of the cheque. Some services will have an accompanying form to identify the service for which you are making payment. Please note that receipts are not sent for these payments.

Paying in person

You can pay by cash, cheque, postal order or debit card at any of our neighbourhood offices. Please ensure that you receive a receipt from the cashier.        

Paying on-line (Building Regulations Applications, Council Tax, Business Rates, Rents and Sundry Income)

The service is provided by Santander's BillPay scheme on behalf of the council. You do not need to be a Santander account holder. The service is available 24 hours a day 365 days a year.  Full details of how to use the service, including registering as a new user, and importantly the assurance that the latest encryption technology is used by Santander, can be found at http://www.billpayment.co.uk/. To use the service you will need a debit or credit card.  

Planning Payments

The on-line submission and payment of planning applications is now available from the Planning Portal.

Parking fines / Fixed Penalty Notice

Parking Fines can be paid on-line via the Nottinghamshire County Council website

Post Office

You can pay council tax, business rates, housing rents and sundry income payments at the Post Office.  Transcash payments can be made at any Post Office, however the Post Office may charge for this service.
