Newark’s Buttermarket and Royal Exchange is now owned and managed in partnership by Newark and Sherwood District Council and Newark Town Council.
A phased plan of action is underway that will initially see activity and life brought back in the buildings. We will also be undertaking some refurbishments and repairs.
We see the iconic buildings as playing a major and strategic role in boosting the town’s retail, cultural and leisure offer.
A number of new shops are open in the Buttermarket in the short term giving local and new ‘start-up’ enterprises a central high street position to enjoy. This has created a busy and vibrant atmosphere in the Buttermarket giving us time to formulate our longer term plans.
Disabled access is available via Chain Lane and Middlegate Entrances.
Temporary shop units (up to November 1st) in Newark Buttermarket
We welcome start-up enterprises and retail, makers and crafters and any local business in need of temporary space. You can also hire a cart on a daily or weekly basis.

By Tonya Art and Photography Studio
I am a creative minded and family orientated person. I have studied both art and photography and enjoy experimenting with mixed media. My studio is open to everyone whether it be one person to a whole family.
As a mother I have some experience around children with additional needs and would like to offer extra time to families with special and additional needs so that they are comfortable and ready to go in front of the camera.
In time I am hoping to offer themed photos shoots.
Hi I am Edit, and I originate from Hungary, although I have made Newark my new home. I sell the most beautiful hand-made ceramic flowers , hand-made by my own family back home in Hungary.
I have a successful business and love doing events and supporting Newark Market! My flowers are beautiful and last forever, they brighten up any room. I have created a fantastic customer base, and look forward to my year ahead.
We are The Soup Dwagon. We offer a mobile catering experience providing a range of rustic home-made soups with locally sourced ingredients. We have a five star hygiene rating and can offer healthy take-way options at part of the council’s HOT scheme.
We are 'letsxcape together' a family and friends orientated board gaming and events cafe in association with letsXcape the escape rooms at Kelham Hall. On offer is hosted board gaming along with coffees and teas as well as savoury grazing pots.
We hope locals and visitors will pop in and check out our services and maybe grab a bargain as we are offering new discounted games to buy as well. Hosted board gaming, birthday parties, business meet-ups and team building events.
