Please note that in order to maintain social distancing, from Wednesday, July 8, there will be a one way system operating in the Buttermarket. The public may enter through the Middle Gate entrance and proceed through to the town hall or exit down the Royal Exchange and out to Chain Lane. There is no access to the Tambo Lounge through the Buttermarket, please use their Middle Gate entrance. There is no access to the Buttermarket from Chain Lane or access through the town hall out to Middle Gate. Access to Hobsons Shoes is by following the one way system in the Buttermarket or directly into the shop from Chain Lane. Signage is prominent throughout the building, please observe and respect all notices that are in place for public protection.
Newark’s Buttermarket and Royal Exchange is owned and managed in partnership by Newark and Sherwood District Council and Newark Town Council.
A phased plan of action is underway that will see new long term retail, food and drink and high street services coming to the building.
We see the iconic Buttermarket as playing a major and strategic role in boosting the town’s retail, cultural and leisure offer.
Our plans
The remainder of the building is being redeveloped for new retail and commercial offerings. We will be announcing new tenants soon and posting progress updates.
Specsavers
Opening soon!
National optician chain Specsavers will soon to be opening a new premises adjacent to Newark’s Buttermarket. They’ll be opening the doors to their new address of 25 Middle Gate on the 18th December, moving from their current location within Morrisons. The move will offer a larger store for the well-known brand as well as being a great investment in the town centre and likely increasing footfall through it. This is yet another hugely positive step in the revitalisation of this stunning building following the introduction of Tambo Lounge and Iguazu earlier this year. Stay tuned for updates on the opening.
Tambo Lounge
Tambo Lounge has now re-opened with a few alterations to ensure safety for both staff and customers.
Tambo offers delicious food and drinks including vegan and gluten-free options. Call in for breakfast, lunch, tea or dinner, with a licenced bar running through into the late evening.
From Wednesday, July 8:
- An exciting new sit-in menu
- More space between the tables
- A new app to order your food
- A re-trained team and strict cleaning & hygiene procedures
While there are a few changes, the spirit of Lounging remains exactly the same. At Tambo Lounge you’ll find the same hospitality, personality and atmosphere you’re accustomed to, along with delicious, freshly cooked food and drinks.
