Newark Towns Fund
It was announced in September 2019 that Newark was chosen as one of 100 towns in the UK to receive up to £25 million worth of investment, as part of the Government’s ‘Town Deal’ process.
In return for funding, we need to submit a Towns Fund Investment Plan to the Government. This will set out a range of projects for the next 10 to 15 years that provide a basis for future investment and offer value for money, including any match investment from the private or other sectors.
We want to hear from you!
Alongside our main online consultation survey, we also want local children to share their ideas with us, so that we can create a better Newark for everyone.
What does Newark mean to you? What would make Newark a great place to live?

What happens next?
A group of readers from across Newark and Sherwood District Council and Newark Town Council will read and enjoy all the letters. We will identify the letters that best fit the guidelines for a persuasive letter and make two shortlists: the ten best letters from children aged 7-9 and the ten best letters from children aged 10-12.
Our team of young judges will read the letters in the shortlists and choose a winner and two runners up in each age category. The results will be announced on Thursday 23rd July 2020.
- The winners in each age category will win an Amazon Fire tablet.
- Special prize for the most exciting idea for Future Newark – Amazon Fire tablet.
- The four runners up each win a £10 book token.
After the winners are announced, we will contact every letter writer to tell you what has happened to your ideas. All your ideas will be carefully considered when we are developing Future Newark. Tell us what you think and good luck!
What is persuasive writing?
You are trying to persuade the reader to do something. In this case, you are trying to persuade the Council to turn your ideas into reality because they are better than everyone else’s. To do that, follow these guidelines:
- Use formal language – this is an important letter, not a chat
- Explain your ideas clearly with a strong argument
- Use emotional language
- Use powerful words
- Try a rhetorical question or two
- Organise your paragraphs
