Reinvigoration plans for Newark town centre to spark growth and pride
Plans to reinvigorate Newark town centre into a vibrant destination to increase tourism, attract investment and boost pride among local people has been submitted as part of Newark Towns Fund Board’s application for the Towns Fund, a Government pledge to invest up to £25 million into town centres.
The project, named Newark’s Cultural Heart, would involve the development of a new identity that Newark would become recognised for, articulating the town’s unique characteristics, with the overarching objective of increasing town centre footfall.
A free and varied year-long event calendar would be established to celebrate local culture, provide benefits to the local community and attract new visitors. If funding is granted, the Board would work alongside public and private sector partners to maximise the town’s potential.
The campaign would also include wayfinding informational signage and street art, reflecting Newark’s sense of community and celebrating the town’s rich culture and heritage.
Furthermore, the new identity would act as a catalyst to further grow the town, create new jobs, training opportunities and improve productivity.
Councillor David Lloyd, Co-chair of the Newark Towns Fund Board and Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “The Newark Cultural Heart project is particularly significant, as it would strengthen Newark’s sense of place, truly putting the town on the map as a vibrant destination to visit, work and live in.
“The exciting plans would complement the other priority projects included in the Town Investment Plan, support economic growth, create synergy between our local businesses and provide inward investment by creating an identity known regionally and nationally. Newark is the key to the north, it sits on two major rail routes and we plan to be instantly recognisable to passing travellers.”
Feedback from the Board’s public consultation on the future of Newark identified the need to expand the town centre offer, in order to widen its appeal to residents, visitors and local workforce.
