Sky lanterns banned

21 June 2018

Sky lanterns and helium balloon releases are to be banned in council parks.

The decision has been made in due to concerns about the environmental impact of the balloons and risk to the public and animals.

Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Leisure and Environment Committee also made the decision to ask  parish and town councils and large venues in the district to prohibit balloons and sky lantern from being released on their land.

Business Manager for Environmental Health, Alan Batty, said: “We are aware of the dangers of sky lanterns and balloons and I am glad to say the ban has been unanimously agreed by councillors. We hope this ban will help to improve the environment of our parks and protect animals and wildlife.”
