Castle House has positive economic impact

7 July 2017

The building of Castle House has had a positive impact on the local economy, and is set to continue doing so once complete

A report for the Policy and Finance Committee found that the project has brought significant economic benefits to local businesses and the community.

Newark and Sherwood District Council’s new office building has created jobs before and during construction and is set to improve Newark’s economy further once the 230 council staff have moved in.

RG Carter, the main contractors for Castle House, employed 37 sub-contractors, three apprentices and five new staff members in the 17 months leading to completion of the build.

Several local people have benefitted directly from these jobs including a forklift driver, gateman and assistant site manager. RG Carter also got involved with a recruitment fair at Newark Sports and Fitness Centre where three other appointments were made.

Local businesses have seen the benefits of Castle House with 80% of construction spend being made within a 45-mile radius of the site and a large workforce operating close to the town centre.

The positive impact will continue when 230 council staff, alongside staff from DWP, Probation Service and Citizen’s Advice will be working within a short walk of Newark town centre. The council will become much more accessible to residents of Newark and Sherwood in its new headquarters.

Other businesses and organisations will be able to privately hire Castle House’s civic space, which will bring even more people into Newark.

Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, Councillor Roger Blaney said: “Castle House will not only save the Council money, it will bring increased business to Newark. The positive economic impact will be felt throughout the town as soon as the building is in full use.”

Castle House is projected to make savings of up to £500,000 a year after the council moves out of its current HQ, Kelham Hall later this year. The project is currently running on time and on budget and staff are expected to start moving in in September.
