Platinum Jubilee

In 2022, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service.

Celebrations and events took place across the UK, here in Newark and Sherwood, and around the world, with an extended Bank Holiday weekend from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June.

Events in the district

Lots of exciting events took place across the district with more than 60 towns and villages celebrating the Jubilee over the June bank holiday.

The National Civil War Centre got involved too as their Family Saturday on Saturday 4 June celebrated the Jubilee with themed craft sessions. Visitors were able to create artwork inspired by books published during the year of the coronation as well as taking part in usual Family Saturday activities including family-friendly tours and storytelling.

In addition, tourism attractions and businesses across the district hosted their own exciting Jubilee events.

Beacons were also lit across the county during the evening to kick off the bank holiday weekend.

Residents were also encouraged to plant a tree to improve the environment and create a legacy to honour the Queen. Newark and Sherwood District Council has already planted their own tree at Sconce and Devon Park earlier this year

The brand new plum tree aptly named ‘Jubilee’ was planted by Newark and Sherwood District Chairman Councillor Penny Rainbow at a special ceremony on Friday 11 March. A plaque was also added to commemorate the planting of the tree.
