An updated plan setting out where housing and employment development will be supported in principle across Newark and Sherwood has been adopted by Newark and Sherwood District Council.
Approved by Full Council on 20 October, the plan confirms a range of housing and employment sites across the district and updates the policies used to determine planning applications. It replaces the Council’s previous Allocations & Development Management Plan adopted in 2013.
The plan also introduces new policies for affordable housing and housing mix. It also includes new policies and site allocations to help meet the accommodation needs of Gypsies and Travellers over the next few years.
The plan has been through extensive public consultation and independent examination. The Government-appointed Planning Inspector concluded that, with the recommended changes, the plan is sound and provides an appropriate basis for planning across the district.
Claire Penny, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Economic Development, said:
This plan gives residents, communities and businesses greater certainty about where development is planned and how future proposals will be considered.
It confirms the sites needed for housing and employment, strengthens our approach to affordable housing and sets out how we will meet the accommodation needs of Gypsies and Travellers.
Our focus now moves to preparing a completely new Local Plan for Newark and Sherwood which is required given some new, more challenging housing targets and giving our communities further opportunities to help shape where future development takes place.
Adoption of the plan does not give planning permission for individual developments. Planning applications will continue to be assessed against the relevant local and national planning policies.
Work is already under way on a new Local Plan for Newark and Sherwood, which will consider the district’s longer-term development needs. Public consultation on this plan will take place in Summer 2027.
Residents can find the adopted plan and supporting information on the Council’s Amended Allocations and Development Management DPD page.
