Newark and Sherwood District Council is proud to announce that it has been shortlisted for the 2026 Political Purpose Awards in the Green Council of the Year Award category.
The award recognises councils leading the way on climate, nature and sustainability, from greener local services and active travel to ambitious nature recovery on their doorstep.
Newark and Sherwood District Council planted approximately 110,000 trees across the district in 2025/26, including 34,000 directly funded by the Council, against a core annual environmental budget of £26,127.
A move to kerbside glass recycling in April 2024 increased glass collections by 40% in the first year, from 1,500 to 2,100 tonnes, with a further uplift of nearly 200 tonnes in year two. The Council's Alexander Lodge development, a low-carbon temporary accommodation scheme using timber-frame construction, solar PV, a communal battery system and a shared plant room design that reduced boiler requirements by 50%, generates over 50,000 kWh of renewable electricity annually.
The Council is set to become one of only seven in England to offer kerbside vape collection, in partnership with Veolia.
The Political Purpose Awards by Nature 2030, now in their fourth year, recognises the politicians, campaigners, councils and organisations who have done the most to champion environmental causes over the last year.
