An ambitious and exciting regeneration project will be starting by the end of October, marking an important step forward in delivering new homes, improved facilities, and long-term benefits for residents on the Yorke Drive estate in Newark.
At Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Policy and Performance Improvement Committee today (Monday 14 September), it was confirmed that work will begin by Saturday 31 October 2026. This means residents will soon see activity in the area. The first phases of work will include the erection of hoarding, the demolition of four homes closest to the playing fields and the pavilion, and drainage works as part of preparations for the first phase of the new homes.
Alongside the development of new homes, this project will improve safety in the area and bring significant improvements to sports and recreational facilities.
Newark and Sherwood District Council, which has led the project, has involved the community at every step through a range of engagement and consultation events to help refine the plans.
Councillor Lee Brazier, Portfolio Holder for Housing at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said:
I know this hasn’t been an easy journey for the Yorke Drive community, but I want to thank them for their incredible patience and support in getting us to this stage.
While this is great news, there is still a significant amount of work to do, and we will continue to work with residents to support them over the next few years as this project takes shape.
As a district council, this has remained one of our top priorities for many years, and we will continue to push this project forward. The positive impact this project will have on the community will be significant, and with such an important development it’s vital we get it right.
Everyone is keen to get ‘spades in the ground’ as soon as possible, and we’ll keep residents regularly informed on our progress.
Due to the scale of the project, it will be delivered over several phases. Improvements to the playing fields, delivery of a new sports pavilion, and construction of the new homes required for existing residents will all take place first.
In total, 207 homes will be built, with a mix of private and social homes in different sizes to suit a range of households. Other improvements include:
- Creating an attractive and welcoming entrance from Lincoln Road.
- Improving links between Yorke Drive and the surrounding area.
- Providing solar panels and battery storage to support tenants with their heating bills.
- Increasing car parking provision across Yorke Drive, including electric vehicle charging points.
- Providing a new pavilion and green space at the heart of the estate, giving residents access to Football Association-standard playing pitches and facilities.
