Food waste recycling trial
From October 2026, around 3,000 households across the district will take part in a six-month food waste collection trial ahead of the county-wide introduction of food waste collections from October 2027.
Addressing questions about the food waste recycling trial
After our crews have collected your food waste it is taken to a local plant, where liners are split and removed and the food is recycled via an anaerobic digester. In the process the food is turned into biogas, which generates energy and fertiliser.
It’s great that you’re composting! Home composting is a fantastic way to recycle food waste. If you have any food waste that is not suitable for your compost bin, such as cooked foods, please pop them in your food waste caddies.
It is unlikely that you don't produce any food waste – some food waste is unavoidable! For example, this could be mouldy food, bones, banana skins etc. No amount is too small to use your food waste caddies!
