Newark Farmer's market
The best place to find excellent food is at a farmer’s market. This is where growers, bakers and all kinds of food and drink makers sell their produce direct to you.
And the good news is the NEW Newark Farmer’s Market takes place on the first Saturday of each month.
Visit the avenues outside the Town Hall between 9.30am and 3.30pm for the best seasonal produce that the region has to offer.
Products on offer will include locally sourced meats, sausages and bacons, award winning pastries and pies, renowned cheeses from Cropwell Bishop Creamery and Lincolnshire Poacher, delicious brownies and confectionary, international food, specialist coffees and locally grown chillies.
Southwell Country Market
There is a Country Market in Southwell each Saturday at 8.30am to 11.30am in the WI Hall. The indoor market sells local seasonal fruit, vegetables and plants, honey and homemade jams and chutney, cakes and bakes and crafts. Refreshments are available.
Newark Livestock Market
Statement from Newark and Sherwood District Council - Friday 6 March 2020
Newark and Sherwood District Council has taken steps to terminate its lease with Newark Cattle Market due to substantial rent arrears.
The Council owns the Cattle Market site and has been pursuing the leaseholder for non-payment of rent. Despite having made numerous attempts to work with the leaseholder and provide assistance and flexibility where possible around the rent arrears, the leaseholder has continually failed to meet the agreed schedule of payments and the Council has been left with no alternative than to terminate the lease.
Councillor David Lloyd, Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “It’s extremely disappointing that we’ve been forced to take this action but it would be unfair on every other business and resident in Newark and Sherwood who pays their taxes if we simply ignored the Cattle Market’s substantial and longstanding arrears. We’ve provided the Cattle Market leaseholder plenty of time and every opportunity to settle their significant rent arrears. Terminating the lease of the Cattle Market is not a decision that we’ve taken lightly and we’re obviously concerned about the impact on our local farming community. The reality though is that we have lost trust and confidence in the current leaseholder and have exhausted every informal avenue to secure repayment of monies owed to the Council. Regrettably, we have been left with no option but to terminate the lease with them.”
It is likely that the Cattle Market may close this weekend. The Council is mindful of the importance of the Cattle Market to the local rural community. We are considering alternative arrangements for the market to continue over the short term on its current site, and, for the long term on an alternative site, if a viable or sustainable solution can be achieved.
With 16 stalls on Saturdays, there is lots of choice for all your weekly requirements.
Stalls currently offer fresh fish, fresh meat, deli foods, bread, biscuits, cakes, plants, pet food, greetings cards, cycle store, toiletries, jewellery, books, soft furnishings, sweets, cut flowers and of course, fruit and veg.
The stall holders are helpful and friendly and the atmosphere is lovely.
