Running from Saturday 6 June to Sunday 14 June, Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. Newark and Sherwood District Council is inviting residents, businesses and community groups to get involved by making small changes that can have a big impact.

As a Green Champion, you’re not just picking up litter; you’ll be joining the charge in Newark and Sherwood’s efforts to protect the environment. While a simple action, litter picking makes an immediate and visible difference to the places where we live, work and play. Residents can receive all the necessary equipment to carry out voluntary litter picking, including collection bags and high-visibility vests provided by the Council, who will also arrange collection of the litter gathered.

More information about becoming a Green Champion or organising a community litter pick is available on the District Council’s website: https://www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/bins-waste-recycling/street-cleaning-litter/community-litter-picks

Alongside this, residents are reminded that reporting environmental issues such as fly-tipping, littering or damaged public spaces is vital in helping Council teams respond quickly and maintain high standards across the district.

Reports can be submitted easily via the Council’s website, ensuring the right team can take action as soon as possible: https://www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/report

Residents can also make use of the Green Rewards app, which recognises and rewards people for taking environmentally friendly actions. From choosing to walk or cycle instead of driving, to cutting down on household waste or supporting local green initiatives, every action contributes to a more sustainable district. The app allows users to track their efforts, earn points and receive rewards, making it easier and more motivating to build greener habits into everyday life.

Councillor Simon Forde, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Climate Change, said: “Great Big Green Week is all about empowering our communities to take simple, positive action and recognise the impact that small changes can make. By becoming a Green Champion, taking pride in our local areas through activities like litter picking, reporting issues when they arise, and embracing more sustainable choices in everyday life, our residents are playing a vital role in protecting the environment. It’s fantastic to see communities come together in this way, and collectively we can make a real and lasting difference for Newark and Sherwood.”

Throughout the week, residents are encouraged to get involved in whatever way they can, whether that’s making small lifestyle changes, encouraging others to join in, or simply taking a moment to think about how they can help care for their local environment.
