Moving into the area

There's a lot to think about when you're moving home. We've put together a list of council services you may want to think about.

Register for Council Tax

It's important to register for Council Tax at your new address.

You can tell us if you:

  • have already moved
  • are moving in the next 21 days 

Start now

Apply for a Council Tax discount or exemption

Your Council Tax bill could be reduced if you're eligible for a Council Tax discount or an exemption. This could include:

  • a 25% reduction if you are a single person occupier
  • reductions if you are a full-time student
  • reductions if you or someone who lives with you is disabled

Apply for benefits and financial support 

You may be eligible for help with your Council Tax and/or Housing Benefit if you are on a low income or receive certain benefits. To check your eligibility and make a claim, go to apply for benefits and financial support.

You also need to make a new claim at your new address if you received benefits at your previous address and want to keep claiming them.

Make sure you update your address details with any benefit providers you receive support from, such as Universal Credit, by contacting them directly as soon as possible after your move.

Register to vote

You need to register to vote at your new address before you can vote in UK elections, including local council elections.

Bins, waste and recycling collections

There will be a number of different bins at your new home. To check your bin collection day, and to find out what goes in which bin, go to bin collections.

You can also sign up for a new garden waste subscription.

Register for MYNS 

Register for MyNS to:

  • see what day your bin collections are due to take place
  • log and keep track on a number of different service requests, including booking a bulky waste collection or reporting a street cleaning issue

Order a replacement or a new bin 

You can order a replacement bin if yours is missing, lost or damaged.

If you have moved into a new-build home, you can order a bin for a new property.

Council tenants

If you have moved into a council home, go to council tenants.

Apply for a parking permit

If you have moved to a street which has an on-street residents' car parking permit scheme, go to residents' parking schemes – Nottinghamshire County Council for a permit.

Apply for a school place

To apply for a school place, go to school admissions – Nottinghamshire County Council.

Gas, electricity and water 

For gas, electricity and water supplies, contact your utility supplier directly.
