Returning art display transforms Newark Market Place once again
Posted on: Tuesday, May 6, 2025An art display featuring bees, butterflies and sunflowers has returned to Newark Market Place for a second year and aims to animate the town centre and add some colour for visitors while they shop.
The installation, organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council in partnership with Newark Town Board through the Newark Heart project, follows similar projects from previous years, including a successful Neurodiversity Umbrella project with Newark Creates in 2023 that saw fantastic colourful umbrellas up above the marketplace. These were so well received that it was decided to continue the legacy of the umbrellas with iconic installations.
The display aims to spread a positive message about biodiversity and the environment which is why it features an array of handcrafted and recyclable artwork.
Matthew Gleadell, Town Clerk at Newark Town Council, said: “The colourful bunting and charming market place decorations cannot fail to add a bit of extra joy to a visit to the town centre. With an array of events once again planned for the town centre this year the colourful decorations help to add a welcoming ambience to the town.”
The project has been funded through the Newark Towns Fund, UK Shared Prosperity Fund scheme, Arts Council England as well as part funded by Newark Town Council. It will remain in position until the end of Summer.
Councillor Claire Penny, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Economic Development at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “We’re lucky in Newark to have a marketplace that can really benefit from installations like this to make the area look even more bright and welcoming.
“We hope to have the same impact again this year and we encourage visitors to come and see the art and other events happening for themselves. You can also explore our beautiful town centre by visiting our wonderful independent shops and have lunch in one of our fantastic pubs, cafes or restaurants.”
Newark Creates plans on holding a wide range of events in the town centre this year with many taking place underneath the canopy of the art installation. On Sunday 15 June, in association with SO Festival, they will once again host the Streets Ahead event with the backdrop of the returning installation. The international Street Theatre and Outdoor Arts show will return to the Market Place and will include international acrobats, dance and modes of fun transport. The event is free for everyone to attend and is sure to be a great day out for families!
The Newark Creates cultural programme has seen the curation of free arts and heritage events and activities across Newark since it was established in 2021. This year, the programme is once again supported by Newark Town Board’s Newark Heart project, alongside the Arts Council England, creating opportunities for more activities within these well-established events than ever before.
