Planning breaches and enforcement

How to let us know if you think someone has broken planning rules, including how we enforce planning regulations.

If you think someone has breached planning rules, you can report it to us.

Report now

What you need to tell us

You'll need to include:

  • the precise location of the site or property to which the breach relates, including an address
  • the exact nature of the concern
  • the identity of the person or organisation responsible for the alleged breach when the alleged breach began, if possible
  • your name and address, which will be held in confidence and not disclosed. If you wish to remain anonymous you should submit your complaint through your local councillor or parish council

Check if a development has planning permission

You can also check if planning permission has been granted for the development on the planning register.

After you submit your report

You may be asked to give evidence if the matter proceeds to a planning appeal or to court. If this happens, we will not be able to withhold your details.

Once a breach of planning control has been identified, it can be a lengthy process to resolve. We’ll always try to keep you informed of the outcome of any case you report and you can contact us at any time.

How we enforce planning regulations

For guidance on planning enforcement and our responsibilities, go to enforcement and post-permission matters – GOV.UK.

You can also download our Planning Enforcement Plan, which details how we investigate alleged breaches of planning control.

Enforcement register

We are responsible for keeping a record of:

  • enforcement notices
  • temporary stop notices
