Following the announcement that the UK government will be providing funding for households and business owners affected by Storm Henk, applications are now open. Grants through the Flood Recovery Framework are available to homes and businesses that have been flooded.

The District Council’s Environmental Team is hard at work this winter, with a scope of projects underway to protect, maintain and enhance the district’s biodiversity and landscapes, and create a greener Newark and Sherwood.

Following the success of the previous Clinic in 2023, Newark and Sherwood District Council, in partnership with NBV Enterprise Solutions, are offering another Start-Up Support Clinic for local businesses who wish to receive free specialist advice and local support to get their business idea off the ground.

Newark Castle will be home to a team of archaeologists from this week as an exciting dig commences. Its aim is to reveal more about the Castle’s historic layout, tracing the structure of a stable building which was in situ at least 200 years ago.

A mystery Roman object that continues to puzzle archaeologists is now available to view at the National Civil War Centre: Newark Museum.

Newark and Sherwood District Council is continuing to clear and clean up areas affected by Storm Henk. Over the past few days, the District Council’s Environmental Team have been working to clean roads and footpaths of debris following Storm Henk and have been able to tackle the vast majority of areas affected. The waste crews have also been out and collected a number of bins that had to be missed due to the flooding.

Work continues to support local communities suffering the effects of Storm Henk. Newark and Sherwood District Council officers are out in some of the worst-affected areas today with teams visiting homes on Kelham Road and Carlton Ferry Lane as well as the villages of Gunthorpe, Lowdham and Collingham.

In May 2023, we worked with Newark Town Council and consulted with the public and other key stakeholders, such as local schools, college students and those living within proximity of Sherwood Avenue Park, on what they would like to see at the park in the future. The outcomes of this consultation have informed the plans for the development of Sherwood Avenue Park. 

Although flood waters are subsiding in various locations around the district, we are now aware that there are significant flooding risks to properties as a result of rising water levels at the Torksey Gauge. The levels have reached a point at this Gauge where it will impact our communities in the north-west of the district. 

Newark and Sherwood District Council is encouraging residents to stay safe during the severe flooding caused by Storm Henk. It is urging residents not to travel unless absolutely necessary and has set up a place of safety for anyone whose home is flooded or at risk of flooding.
