The District Council garden recycling service is open for 2024/25 sign ups

You can now sign up to the 2024/25 service and join over 18,000 residents who are already signed up! For £37 you get a brown bin and an all-year-round collection service, which occurs every two weeks between March and November, and monthly from December to February. If you need to order an additional bin you can do so for £37 each.

Your brown bin can be used to dispose of:

• grass cuttings
• hedge trimmings
• leaves
• small branches and twigs (up to 10cm in diameter)
• plants and weeds
• cut flowers
• chopped up Christmas trees in January

Renewal letters and emails to existing customers are being sent out, inviting residents to continue their participation in the scheme. Once customers have renewed, they will receive a letter with the new sticker.

The service runs from April 1 until March 31. Upon receipt of payment customers will be given a sticker to place on their bin. Only bins with stickers on will be collected.

By recycling your garden waste, you are helping to ensure it is disposed of as responsibly and sustainably as possible, without it ending up at landfill sites, meaning fewer greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere.

Councillor Keith Melton, Portfolio Holder for Climate Change at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “Our garden recycling service is a great example of how our greening initiatives can benefit both residents and the planet. Not only does it make disposing of your garden waste simpler, but it also means that waste can be recycled into nutrient-rich soil conditioner that can be used in many ways to support the environment such as in agriculture, landscaping and in some multipurpose composts.

“The warmer weather is approaching so now is a great time to start preparing your garden ready for spring, so I encourage everyone to sign up to the scheme as they start to get back out there!”

In addition to its garden recycling service the Council is focused on an exciting programme of initiatives to achieve a greener and more sustainable future for the district, including its tree strategy to help reduce its carbon footprint and capture carbon, the protection and enhancement of local parks and green spaces, and its most recent commitment to revive the health of local waterways and, by extension, oceans through the ‘Motion to the Ocean’ initiative.

Recent projects to achieve this include the planting of 800 trees in Rainworth, the restoration of the Sconce and Devon community orchard and the Three River Project at Vicar Water Country Park which will help to improve the health and flow of the water through the river at the park.
