Training

We want to support our local businesses to find the right employees, and help our residents to develop the skills they need to secure employment. Our pre-employment training programme and regular jobs fairs help link the right candidates with the right employers.

Our dedicated employment and skills group brings together delivery partners to:

  • help people who are out of work to secure sustainable employment
  • support employers with their recruitment and skills needs
  • link education with business to help mould our future workforce.

If you have any employment and skills-related queries, email us at economic.growth@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk

Apprentice Open Day

Are you ready to develop your career? Join us at Castle House on Friday 27th June for our exciting Apprentice Open Day. Whether you're a school leaver or exploring early career options, this event is your chance to discover how you can earn while you learn with Newark and Sherwood District Council. From 10am to 12pm, we’re welcoming schools for an exclusive session, followed by a drop-in event for the general public from 12pm to 2pm. With six of our business units hosting interactive stalls, you’ll get a real insight into the diverse opportunities available and what it’s like to work with us.

Explore, Engage, and Be Inspired

Throughout the day, you’ll hear from former apprentices at our Speakers’ Corner, sharing their journeys and offering advice. There’ll also be fun, interactive games to keep the energy high and the experience memorable. We’re actively recruiting new apprentices and want you to leave feeling informed, inspired, and excited about the possibilities ahead. Whether you're just starting out or looking to take the next step, come and see why we’re aiming to be an employer of choice in your community.

Skills and training assessment

To enable you to reach your full potential we have put together an assessment which will allow you, or with the assistance of a support worker, to identify what skills you would like to develop.

The assessment is a very simple online form that asks you to rate how confident you feel in certain development areas such as communication, budgeting, your own home and employment.

At the end of the assessment, you will be able to identify relevant information or courses that could help you prepare to access housing, employment or managing your finances. Many of the skills are supported by a catalogue which  includes information on all the relevant courses that are available. Each catalogue includes the delivery mode, the duration and location of the courses and if it results in a qualification.

The assessment can be carried out as many times as you would like. We would suggest identifying three to four skills that are manageable or suitable and revisit when you are ready for the next step.

A copy of your skills assessment summary can be downloaded using the ‘Print’ button after completing the assessment, this includes the contact details needed to register on a course.

Please contact us on 01636 650000 and ask for the Housing Options team if you need help in completing the assessment.

Take the skills and training needs assessment.

The Council will only retain your form for one working day before it is securely deleted. You can view the District Council’s privacy notice on how we use personal data.

Free pre-employment training programme for employers

We provide a free pre-employment training programme to employers with job vacancies. We work with employers to create a bespoke training programme based on their skills requirements. The programme helps give candidates an awareness of a given sector and work areas.

As part of this process all candidates will be pre-screened on behalf of the employer. The only thing an employer has to offer in return is guaranteed interviews.

As well as the pre-employment training programme, we host regular jobs fairs to enable employers to promote their vacancies free of charge.

Future First Careers Expo

Organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council in partnership with The Lincoln Group and Newark Advertiser, the annual Future First Careers Expo invites students from across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire to talk to over 50 businesses - both local and national - and education and training providers about the variety of exciting opportunities that are available to them after school.

Students are given the opportunity to be introduced to industries and career paths they had perhaps not come into contact with before, ask specific questions about their future and gain invaluable insight.

If you are a business or an education and training provider that would be interested in having a stand at the Future First Careers Expo please email veronica.dennant@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk

The 2024 Expo will take place on 14 November at the Lady Eastwood Centre at Newark Showground
