Electrical Safety in your home

Electricity is essential but must be treated with care. Misusing electrical goods or attempting DIY wiring can lead to electric shock, fire, or even death.

Electrical safety at home

Wiring

  • Never carry out DIY electrical work. Mistakes can cause overheating, fires, and electric shock.
  • All wiring must be completed by a qualified electrician.

Sockets

  • Do not overload sockets or use multiple extension leads.
  • Report any signs of burning, cracked, or broken sockets immediately.

Electrical Goods

  • Buy electrical goods from reputable retailers that meet British Standards.
  • Inspect items before use for damage, exposed wires, or burn marks.
  • Do not leave appliances switched on unattended.
  • Unplug chargers and transformers when not in use.

Electrical installation changes

As a tenant of Newark and Sherwood District Council, please be aware of the following when considering changes to electrical installations.

  • You must obtain permission before altering or adding to your electrical installation.
  • This includes installing EV chargers or adding power to sheds/garages.
  • If permission is granted, you must provide certification from a competent, accredited electrician in line with current standards.

Electrical inspections

As a tenant of Newark and Sherwood District Council, you must allow us access to your home for an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) every 5 years. During the visit, our qualified electricians will:

  • Inspect sockets, light fittings, and wiring.
  • Carry out any necessary repairs during the visit.
