Free visit to the National Memorial Arboretum for veterans

Posted on: Friday, March 4, 2022

A free visit to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire is being organised for veterans within Newark and Sherwood. The visit will provide an appropriate opportunity for former service personnel to relax and spend time together catching up while and enjoying a day out. Attendees will be picked up by coach and the day out includes a free two course meal.

The full day outing to the Arboretum takes place on Friday 22 April and is being organised by Nottinghamshire County Council in partnership with Newark and Sherwood District Council and Nottingham Forest Community Trust - Forest Forces.

Tickets will be on offer on a first come, first served basis and the coach will set off from two locations in the district. Coach one will pick up in Ollerton at 8.30am and return at 3pm. Coach two will pick up in Newark at 8.45am and return at 3pm. Transport and lunch will be provided free of charge.

90 spaces are currently available and veterans will need to provide proof of service when booking on. This event follows on from previous community engagement with veterans including a veteran’s breakfast hosted at Newark Town Hall in November and a veteran’s walk in March.

Deputy Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council and Armed Forces Champion at Nottinghamshire County Council, Councillor Keith Girling, said: “The armed forces play a vital role in the district and we are forever grateful for the service they provide in protecting our country.

“Once again we are pleased to offer the opportunity for veterans in Nottinghamshire to visit the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The trip is a chance for veterans to engage with like-minded people and enjoy a day out. The Arboretum is a breath-taking site that remembers those who lost their lives in armed conflict with almost 400 memorials across the area.

“We’ll continue to do what we can to support those in the armed forces by hosting events just like this both in our district and in our workforce enabling them to have the care and backing when they need it most.”
