Update on your Council Tax for 2023 – 2024

Posted on: Thursday, March 9, 2023

For most people in Newark and Sherwood, your Council Tax is made up of five main parts. The main bulk, 73.2%, is set by Nottinghamshire County Council and it has set its increase for 2023 – 2024 at 4.84%.

The next portion of your Council Tax goes to the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner (11.4%) which has set its increase at 5.88% and the Nottinghamshire Fire Service (3.8%) which has set its increase at 5.91%.

The remainder (11.7%) is split between your local Parish or Town Council (on average across the district this equates to 3.6% of your Council tax payable, with an average increase of 2.85%) and us, Newark and Sherwood District Council, (8.0%).  This year we have limited the increase to our portion of your Council Tax to 1.94% which is significantly lower than the other elements that make up the amount you pay.

Our increase equates to £3.60 a year on a band D property. Around 84% of properties in Newark and Sherwood are band D and below so the impact for most people will be less than 1p per day. For properties in band C and below, which equates to 73.33% of the district, the increase will be £3.20 and below. This is the second lowest increase across districts in Nottinghamshire and will mean that our rate is lower than three other Nottinghamshire districts.

Proportionally the amount of Council Tax we will receive as a district will go down compared to the previous year.  In 2022 – 2023 we received 8.24p of every pound of Council Tax you pay.  In 2023 – 2024 we will receive 8.03p of every pound of Council Tax paid.

Councillor David Lloyd, Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council said, “Despite a decrease in the amount we receive per pound of Council Tax paid, we are confident we can continue to deliver our vital services to our residents.

“There has never been more demand on our services, for example we receive more housing enquiries than ever before and will have more bin collection rounds than ever before but we remain committed to ensuring we can deliver all our services, helping those who need us the most.

“Rising costs are affecting us all, and we are no different. Our scores of vehicles, buildings, projects, and services are all much more costly to run than previously. But it is our responsibility to ensure that there is enough money available to deliver these vital services which our residents both want and need. This 1.94% increase will ensure we can do so while also keeping costs as low as possible for our residents.”

The table below outlines the percentage increases in 2023 – 2024, compared to the previous year, across the four main parts of your Council Tax.  Also shown is the amount, per pound, that each organisation receives.
