District Council gives green light to new Corporate Asset Management Strategy

Posted on: Thursday, July 14, 2022

THIS week Councillors approved the adoption of a new Corporate Asset Management Strategy which provides an overview of Newark and Sherwood District Council owned land, property assets and its main priorities for managing and developing these over the next five years.

One of the key parts of the strategy ensures that all District Council buildings, where possible, will have a decarbonised agenda in mind to reduce environmental impacts through energy and water use; ensuring that any new properties are efficient and cheaper to operate for future tenants.

The strategy also outlines achievements made so far by the District Council including:

  • Proactive partnership working with public and private sectors to deliver development opportunities, this includes the creation of three new retail units and a new hotel at the Former Robin Hood Hotel site in Newark and 29 residential dwellings with ground floor retail units on Stodman Street.
  • The final redevelopment works to the Buttermarket, part funded by the DN2N LEP, with building completion set for September 2022 which offers the potential for seven new retail pods by December 2022.
  • The installation of 12 solar powered car parking ticket machines.

Councillor Rhona Holloway, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Visitors at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said:

“This strategy provides an overall view of our wide property portfolio including all of our commercial tenanted premises, leisure and heritage buildings, office space as well as all those facilities coming on board under a range of different projects being brought forward as part of our Towns Fund initiative. They key purpose of the strategy is to ensure we maintain and enhance all of our property assets and link those to our acquisition and disposal policy. This will in turn allow us to successfully manage our property portfolio as custodians of these important buildings, as well as being able to budget effectively, engage with tenants appropriately and proactively look at opportunities to apply for grants when available.”

“As a District Council we have a duty to ensure all of our buildings comply with the appropriate statuary regulations and corporate standards. Working to these standards help us to ensure the safety of the public and our staff as well as to securing the future for these important assets.”

“The Strategy will focus our work to ensure that greening opportunities are maximised and that all grounds maintenance work undertaken within our property portfolio will reaffirm our commitment to being Cleaner, Safer, Greener.”

The strategy will be reviewed and updated annually to reflect changes in legislation, policy and best practice ensuring land and property assets fully supports the delivery of Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Community Plan.
