Councillor Jean Hall concludes inspiring Chair’s Challenge across Newark and Sherwood
Posted on: Tuesday, May 20, 2025Councillor Jean Hall, Chair of Newark and Sherwood District Council, has successfully completed her Chair’s Challenge—a heartfelt journey across the district to celebrate its people, places, and community spirit.
Spanning two weeks in March and May, Councillor Hall walked and cycled across Newark and Sherwood, highlighting the district’s natural beauty, promoting sustainable travel, and connecting with a wide range of community groups. Her challenge also served a charitable purpose, raising funds for three vital local charities: Nottinghamshire Mind, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, and Newark Women’s Aid.
Reflecting on her journey, Councillor Hall said: "This challenge has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my time as Chair. I’ve met so many inspiring individuals and groups who are making a real difference in our communities. From heritage centres to youth hubs, every stop reminded me of the strength, kindness, and creativity that define Newark and Sherwood. I’m incredibly proud to support our local charities and to have had the opportunity to shine a light on the amazing work happening across our district."
Throughout March, Councillor Hall visited a variety of community organisations, including Sam’s Workplace, which offers work experience for adults with learning difficulties, and the Social Action Hub in Rainworth, where she learned about their essential community support services. She explored the Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum, preserving the area’s mining history, and the Boughton Community Hub, a central space for learning, advice, and activities. She also visited Broadleaves, part of the Housing with Care scheme, and the Dukeries Leisure Centre and Young People Centre in Ollerton, which provide enriching activities for local youth. Her journey continued through the Newark and Sherwood Family Hub, ATTFE, and the Lifespring Centre, which supports the community through events, meals, and practical skills training.
In May, her route took her to Cromwell Village Hall and its community book swap, North Muskham Community Centre, and Winthorpe Village Hall, where she joined in on the wellbeing walks. She also visited Winthorpe Allotments, part of the Crop Drop scheme supporting access to healthy food, and The Shed @ Collingham, a creative space for woodworking and metalwork. At South Scarle Community Hub, she joined local leaders for coffee and conversation, and in Elston, she met volunteers at the community-run shop. Her final stops included the National Civil War Centre, where she enjoyed cake at Café Nineteen 20, and a surprise river trip aboard the Newark Heritage Barge, celebrating the district’s rich waterways history.
The Chair’s Challenge not only raised awareness for local causes but also brought attention to the importance of community connection and environmental sustainability.
